چکیده

Anaerobic biodegradation and characterization of wastewater produced at household level in rural areas in Jordan were considered in this study in order to investigate the possibility of applying house onsite low cost treatment systems. Results showed that the total chemical oxygen demand (CODtot) was 1.8 times higher during summer than during winter. The average CODtot during summer and winter amounted to 2982 mg/l and 1683 mg/l, respectively. The suspended fraction of the COD represents 41% and 38% of CODtot for summer and winter, respectively. Maximum anaerobic biodegradability of the wastewater was found to be 43% (COD basis) for unseeded samples and 59% for seeded samples after 159 days of digestion at 25oC. Hydrolysis rate constant for the seeded samples was calculated to be 0.006 d (R= 0.877). Low biodegradability measured for the wastewater was mainly attributed to excessive use of detergents and disinfectants. Accordingly, household habits should be changed before effective biological anaerobic treatment can be considered.

Effect of initial pH on biodegradation of distillery wastewater by batch process using anaerobic mixed consortia

Biodegradation of distillery wastewater is dependent on initial pH. In this present research, the effect of initial pH from 5.0 to 6.5 on biodegradation of distillery wastewater using anaerobic mixed consortia by batch process was investigated. The parameters like chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency, oxidation reduction potential (ORP), final pH, total phenol content, total protein ...

Anaerobic Biodegradation of Detergent Surfactants

Detergent surfactants can be found in wastewater in relevant concentrations. Most of them are known as ready degradable under aerobic conditions, as required by European legislation. Far fewer surfactants have been tested so far for biodegradability under anaerobic conditions. The natural environment is predominantly aerobic, but there are some environmental compartments such as river sediments...

Optimization of struvite crystallization protocol for pretreating the swine wastewater and its impact on subsequent anaerobic biodegradation of pollutants.

Higher contents of NH(4)(+) and SS in wastewater hamper the anaerobic digestion; necessitating its pretreatment to reduce them. This study reveals optimization of struvite/MAP precipitation protocol followed by anaerobic digestion of pretreated swine wastewater for pollutants removal. Levels of different treatments: stirring speeds, 400 and 160 rpm; pH values, 9.0, 9.5, 10.0, 10.5, 11.0 and 11....

Aerobic /anaerobic biodegradation of beet molasses alcoholic fermentation wastewater

A study of the aerobic degradation of beet molasses alcoholic fermentation wastewater diluted to 50% (chemical oxygen demand, COD: 82 g/l) was carried out using the following fungi: Penicillium sp., Penicillium decumbens , Penicillium lignorum and Aspergillus niger . These four microorganisms produce a decolorization of the wastewater from the first day of incubation, achieving the maximum deco...

Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of polyethylene glycols using sludge microbes

The aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) in a model wastewater was investigated employing sludge microbes from Xiamen Terylene plant. The effect of molecular weight (MW) on the aerobic/anaerobic biodegradation of PEGs was assessed by performing shake flasks/sealed flasks experiments, respectively, using organic model wastewater containing PEG 600, 6000 and 20,000....
